How Do I Control Weeds in My Yard?

Combating weeds in your yard can feel like an uphill battle. Here are some tips to help you fight back:

  1. Mow your lawn tactically. It can be tempting to cut your lawn very low to increase the time between mowings. It may also seem responsible to mow weekly or on a regular schedule. You do want to mow regularly but on an as-needed basis. And keep your grass high. A standard recommendation is 3 – 3 ½ inches tall, though this number may vary depending on the type of grass.
  2. Think density. A full lawn not only looks attractive, but it can also prohibit the growth or slow the spread of weeds. If you have bare spots in your lawn, seeding the area in the early fall can help you improve the appearance of your lawn and fight back against weeds.
  3. Water intentionally. In the south, it’s usually necessary to supplement rainfall with irrigation to maintain a healthy lawn. Do your research and water properly. In most instances, fewer, but longer, periods of watering are key to developing a strong, healthy root system.
  4. Weed effectively. When you are pulling weeds, make sure you remove all – or as much as possible – of the root system. Don’t leave pulled weeds on the soil and avoid mixing pulled weeds into mulch or soil. Some weed varieties can still germinate after being pulled. When possible, remove weeds after a recent rainfall. It makes weeds easier to remove and lessens the spread of seeds.
  5. Fertilize regularly. Proper fertilization, including the application of a pre-emergent in late February or early March, helps make sure your grass is equipped to thrive – and weeds are inhibited.
