PRE-EMERGENT APPLICATIONS AND WEED CONTROL: WHAT ROLE DOES IT PLAY?

You don’t want weeds overtaking your lawn. Pre-emergent applications are the key to slowing weed growth.

What are pre-emergent applications?
Pre-emergent treatments are used to treat a lawn before the weed seeds germinate. This herbicide treatment is applied in the spring to control weeds and prevent them from germination. It also controls summer annuals like chickweed, henbit, crabgrass, and henbit. You can also use the treatment in the fall to control winter weeds like annual bluegrass, common chickweed, and henbit.

Pre-emergent: When should it be used?
Pre-emergent is usually applied in the early spring. Although calendar dates and environmental cues may be useful, the best way to know when to apply herbicide is to observe the germination of the specific weeds. This requires you to be aware of the soil temperature where a particular weed seed germinates and your geographical location. Your lawn might need more than one pre-emergent herbicide depending on the weeds present and the conditions in which they germinate. Lawn care professionals will evaluate a variety of factors to help determine the best time for application in your area.

Remember that it is too late to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to weeds that are already visible in your lawn. Instead, you or a lawn care professional will apply a post-emergent, weed control solution directly to the weed.

Is it possible to use a pre-emergent on any lawn?
In most cases, pre-emergent herbicides are recommended for grass lawns that are at least one year old. The lawn can be damaged if the herbicide is applied after seeding, sprigging or sodding.

What are the advantages of pre-emergent applications?

Pre-emergent treatment has many advantages:

  • It prevents weeds from sprouting.
  • It has little or no effect on ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • It is okay to use on turf grasses that are already established.
