HOW TO REVITALIZE YOUR LAWN

Lawns are an attractive complement to your home when they are thriving. However, lawns can sometimes turn brown and resemble dirt rather than grass. Lawns turn brownish due to a variety of factors, and it may require some trial and error to determine the cause of the browning and additional trial and effort to revive them.

While the knowledge and experience of a lawn care professional may eventually be required, here are several tips that may help you revive your grass and restore the beauty of your yard.

TIPS TO REVIVE A UNHEALTHY LAWN

  • If you notice a problem, act quickly. The longer the grass is allowed to deteriorate, the more difficult it is to treat.
  • Apply fertilizer to your grass as directed on the package. Consider adding lime if your soil is acidic.
  • At least once a week, water the lawn. This is often the simplest way to save dying grass. During hot summer months, proper watering is especially crucial. A summer storm rarely produces sufficient rain to truly saturate the lawn. In addition to a brown lawn, small brown patches can also be caused by overwatering or by insufficient moisture.
  • You may also notice abnormalities in the look of your grass due to animal urine. These variances may present themselves in different ways, including patches of darker, excessive grass growth; a ring of darker, excessive grass growth surrounding a brown patch; and sporadic patches of yellow grass. While wildlife may be to blame, this problem is more often associated with dogs. If possible, encourage your pet to go to the bathroom in a more inconspicuous area of your lawn. Watering the area after your pet urinates may help water down the concentrated salts that are thought to cause urine damage. Finally, maintaining a nutrient-dense lawn will equip your lawn to better respond to pet urine and other potential sources of damage.
  • Larger brown patches are usually the result of root damage caused by pests or diseases. If this is the case, it will take more than water to revive your grass. A soil test can assist you in determining the best conditions for your lawn to thrive in its current state.
  • Remove any rocks or debris from areas where water pools near trees, hedges, or other structures so that it can flow naturally and not become stagnant on the lawn.

Be realistic – don’t expect your lawn to shift from dying to thriving overnight. It is almost always necessary to use more than water to revive brown grass, and it is often a combination of factors that lead to an unhealthy lawn.

It will regrow if it has a healthy root system, enough sunlight, and water, and is otherwise healthy. Excessive watering, on the other hand, can exacerbate damage and create conditions for fungus and pests. Make sure not to overwater your lawn. If there are bare patches caused by disease or pests, they may not regenerate on their own.

Here is where a lawn care professional can be extremely helpful. They will know when and how to fertilize your lawn and control weeds to encourage a healthier lawn. They may also suggest additional preventative maintenance tactics in collaboration with your lawn care process.
